Boston's Leader Mayor Wu Counters Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Games from Boston
The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, implied that the municipality was ready for a face-off with US President Donald Trump regarding his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup matches from the stadium in Foxborough, situated approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Boston.
Wu spoke on a local podcast this week to address comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "far-left." Trump had threatened that he would contact the head of FIFA if Boston did not "improve its situation."
A great deal of it is secured by agreement so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.
Wu added, "We live in a time where for drama, for power, to test limits ... ongoing threats ... are issued at people and cities who refuse to back down and submit or follow along to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu further stated, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is challenging Boston's values." Wu finished by stressing her commitment for the city, saying, "Ten toes down for our city."
The President's Comments and FIFA Role
Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also been to the Oval Office and presented World Cup and Club World Cup awards to Trump as gifts.
Earlier, President Trump was asked about unrest in South Boston that involved a police vehicle being set on fire. Trump responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the president of the organization, who's phenomenal."
Trump added, "I'd tell him: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He might not prefer it. But he would do it very easily." The president also specifically targeted Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"
Previous Warnings and Upcoming Tournament Information
President Trump has previously suggested that he would have the same conversation with Infantino about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 host cities across the continent.
The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The 48-team event is scheduled to be held from 11 June to July 19 in the coming year.
