Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Team But Joe McCarthy Left Out

Rugby team announcement news

Returning manager the Ireland coach has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall matches, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash are also absent because of injury, and number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation following the summer tour.

Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "reserves".

After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a mostly experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again vie for the starting number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced cohort of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at number 15.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the only new name in the Irish pack. The front rower has been in a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship matches this season and played in the second string's loss by the English in Bristol previously.

The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Southern province second row Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, and veteran Ulster lock Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for the captain should the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on Monday before flying to Chicago on the following day.
