Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island located within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, featuring a significant range of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
