Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Claim First Victories Following Player Arrests

NBA game action

Miami put up eighty-six first-half points versus the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat earned a decisive 146-114 win against the Grizzlies in their first NBA match after guard Rozier was detained over suspected unlawful sports betting.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a broad federal investigation into illegal gambling. Both men deny the claims.

But, the Miami team were focused as they put up eighty-six first-half points to lead the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year history.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and afterwards said Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our team.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through the situation."

Portland also won their initial match after the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a convincing 139-119 victory over the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests

Addressing the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

Silver also said an NBA investigation into the player's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.

"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.

"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.

"Moreover two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Rozier.

"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
