The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
