Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
