United Kingdom Expands Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory Roster with 11 Countries
The UK Foreign Office has included an additional eleven further destinations to its travel alert register about the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from adulterated alcoholic drinks.
The expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a global increase in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of methanol poisoning.
Only a few weeks ago, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to several high-profile incidents like the deadly death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can lead to vision loss or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Employed?
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance typically utilized in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for human consumption.
Although it is generated during the manufacture of beverages, commercial firms bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the refining procedure.
Yet in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to save money, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to identify.
